Chapter 7
Elizabeth sighed contentedly and cuddled closer to Todd. They were sitting on the couch in the Wakefields' den with their history notebooks open on their laps, but Elizabeth's mind wasn't on studying. She turned slightly to look up into Todd's coffee-colored eyes, and her notebook tumbled to the floor.
Todd leaned over her and reached for the floor to pick up her notes, but Elizabeth playfully pushed him back in his seat and planted a big kiss on his lips.
"Forget the notebook," Elizabeth said, running her fingers through Todd's curly brown hair. She nuzzled his neck and traced a trail of kisses across his cheek. "We have more important things to do."
"I'm sorry," Todd said, his eyes dancing. "I must be in the wrong house. Either that or you're an imposter and you've kidnapped the real Elizabeth Wakefield."
"I'm not allowed to skip studying for some quality cuddling time with the guy I love?' Elizabeth asked in mock indignation. She sat up and crossed her arms in front of her chest.
Todd laughed and pulled her to him. "You're right," he said huskily. "Who am I to judge?" He wrapped her up in his strong arms, and Elizabeth lost herself in a long, passionate kiss.
When they parted, she let out a spontaneous giggle.
"What's got you in such a good mood, Wakefield?" Todd asked, reaching over to brush a strand of blond hair behind her ear.
"Steven and Lila," Elizabeth said with a smile.
"Steven and Lila?" Todd repeated, his brow furrowing. "I thought you were hoping they would break up."
"That's just it," Elizabeth said happily. "I think they're finally realizing how wrong they are for each other. Those letters were a stroke of genius. . . ."
Elizabeth stopped abruptly and felt her face flame red. She hadn't intended to tell Todd about the little scheme she and Jessica had cooked up.
"What letters?" Todd asked lightly. He trailed a finger down Elizabeth's burning cheek.
"Oh, um, uh, nothing," Elizabeth stammered. This was one of the rare times she wished she was more like Jessica. Maintaining a poker face was not one of Elizabeth's special talents. "Where were we?" she improvised, pulling Todd in for another kiss.
This time when they parted, it was Todd's turn to laugh. "What's eating you, Liz?" he asked. "You look like you just killed your best friend."
"What do you mean?" Elizabeth exclaimed.
"Hey! It's just a figure of speech," Todd said, holding his hands up in surrender. "You just seem a little distracted all of a sudden."
"I'm fine," Elizabeth squeaked. "We should really start studying." She leaned over and quickly grabbed her notebook from the floor. Ditto sheets fluttered out, scattering in all directions.
Todd's eyes narrowed with suspicion. "Come on, Elizabeth," he said, taking her hand. "What's going on? Does this have something to do with Steven and Lila? You mentioned something about letters. . . ."
Elizabeth let out a long, defeated sigh and stared at their entwined fingers. Todd knew her too well. She just hoped he wouldn't be too disappointed in her when he found out about what she and Jessica had done.
